Concept:
In early summer 2006 the 24th International Theatre Festival Freiburg will present outstanding theatre performances for all ages. The artistic direction occurs in co-operation between the Theatre Freiburg and the Theater im Marienbad,Freiburg.
Main festival venues will be the Theatre Freiburg (city theatre) and the Theater im Marienbad. In addition, the festival events will reach out into the “urban space” of Freiburg.
Theatre for all generations:
In 1995 the Theatre Festival Freiburg last focused on productions of the international children and youth theatre scene. The boarders between this genre and the “adult theatre” have become more and more transparent. New and thrilling forms of theatre can be found especially within this international scene. The festival 2006 will base on this development.
Thematic orientation: Title “Faith/Belief”
The question of faith results in many, often intense arguments in politics, society and the arts. The dimensions of the religious reach far into our everyday life. They touch the shaping and development of a concrete co-existence of different religious sects inEurope. In their fundamentalist expressions religions polarise societies in a way that creates new theatres of war.
In private life religion and faith, knowingly or unknowingly, influence the individual search for meaning and they subliminally determine our self-awareness. Religion and faith reach into the relationship between sexes, upbringing and the setting of values.
At the same time theatre as form of art finds itself on its very own ground as soon as it deals with manifestations of the religious. Originally based in religious rituals it has over the last two thousand years driven on the confrontation between faith and reason.
Supporting programme:
An extensive supporting programme with readings, lectures and discussions offers the possibility to focus on “faith and belief” in reference to the invited productions. An independent series of lectures and dialogues about the interaction of religion and theatre is planned as well. Part of the supporting programme will be three work groups that will focus on different aspects of the interaction/relationship of theatre and religion.
For the supporting programme joint projects with other artists and institutions are formed and there will be co-operations with educational institutions, the University Freiburg and confessional institutions. These events will also focus on the festival theme. Further co-operators are national and international theatre institutions (ITI, Assitej, Goethe Institute). The existing exchange with the sister city Isfahan, Iran, shall also be taken into account.
A place for international encounters:
Productions talks have proven to be a suitable institution where the audience can ask the protagonists (ensembles, directors ...) of the invited productions about their specific work methods. A good gastronomic offer and a festival centre (Theater im Marienbad) will invite both audience and artists to stay. Finally, theatrical opening and closing ceremonies will give the festival a special touch.
Inclusion of local theatre groups:
The festival theme offers the opportunity to include the local theatre scene in the festival. The festival
programme will present a theatre project that focuses on the everyday lives of members of different religions inFreiburg.
Venues:
Next to the city theatre and the Theater im Marienbad the festival also wants to use public places and parks. “Theatre expeditions” can discover new, unknown or forgotten places of religious life inFreiburg.
